Quick answer
The short version
Being unable to attend night programs and being unable to attend a festival are different issues. SIDF runs for three days from Friday through Sunday, including daytime workshops. Participation counts even when you choose just one class in the time after dropping off your child and before pickup. You can see the rest of the program next year.
9:20 a.m.: the house becomes quiet after the front door closes
When you return after drop-off and sit at the dining table, a few hours remain before pickup. You do overdue housework, shop for groceries, lie down briefly, and then the alarm goes off.
When hobbies come up, the answer is always similar: ‘While raising a child, what hobby?’ Yet what blocks you is often not time itself, but the time of day.
Something that starts at ten at night is certainly difficult. A two-hour class that starts at eleven in the morning is a different story.
Why daytime workshops fit a parenting schedule
SIDF is a three-day Friday–Sunday program, with workshops, performances, socials, battles, and live concerts divided by time of day. A social is free dance time where participants freely change partners, and it generally takes place at night.
Workshops, by contrast, are scheduled during the day. They have clear start and end times, and leaving in the middle does not affect anyone else's schedule. You can plan backward from your child's pickup time.
| Program | Time-of-day character | Difficulty of attending while parenting |
|---|---|---|
| Workshop | Daytime, with set start and end times | Possible as long as pickup time works |
| Performance/battle | Mostly after evening | Choose a day when you have childcare help |
| Social | Continues late into the night | Fine to skip this time |
Plan a half-day route from drop-off to pickup
- 01
Write down pickup time first
The plan begins not with a workshop, but with when you must collect your child. Subtract travel time from there to find the window you can stay on site.
- 02
Keep only classes that fit inside that window
Check daytime workshops on the official schedule page and shortlist only those whose end time fits inside the window. Leave out close calls.
- 03
Choose only one
Put two classes back to back and you will watch the clock through the second. One class is enough for a first visit.
- 04
Keep energy for the return
Pickup, dinner, and bath follow immediately. You may use the final 30 minutes to watch from the back and wind down rather than pushing yourself.
Specific start times and class lists change each year. Confirm the final timetable on the official schedule page, then lay your own pickup time over it.
Add only a few things to your usual outing bag
Daytime workshop packing list
- Comfortable clothes and one change of top
- Shoes you have already worn that support your feet securely
- Water and a small towel
- A phone with the pickup alarm set
- Bags packed so you can leave immediately afterward
Avoid wearing new shoes for the first time that day. You may be sore the next day when using your body after a long time, so lightly warm up before and after class and drink water from time to time. Bodies differ. If you feel pain, stop the movement and consult a professional if needed.
About the feeling: ‘It feels like I am the only one going out to have fun’
This is a bigger barrier than the timetable. It can be hard to give yourself permission for the sentence, ‘I left my child and went to learn dance.’
But drop-off time is already part of your child's schedule; the only difference is whether you use it for a vacuum cleaner or a workshop. With a plan that keeps pickup time, nothing is missing from your child's day.
I will pick up my child in two hours. I get to decide where those two hours go.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I attend only during the day? I cannot make the night programs.
Yes. SIDF runs from Friday through Sunday, with daytime workshops and nighttime performances and socials. There is no problem with attending only a daytime workshop and returning home. Check the official ticket page to see which tickets include daytime programs.
I have never learned dance. Can I keep up with a daytime workshop?
Difficulty differs by class. Check the level labels on the official schedule page and choose an introductory class. It is fine not to memorize every move; learning while watching from the back is also part of class.
Can I bring my child?
Whether accompanying entry is allowed and the age standard vary each year by operating policy. Do not decide on your own; check the official information page or ask the organizer.
